Village

Unique to CISV is the "Village", a four-week international camp attended by delegations of eleven year old children (two boys and two girls) and an adult leader from twelve nations. Approximately sixty Villages are held each year in various locations worldwide. The Village was the original CISV program and is still its flagship. Delegates to this multilingual and multicultural experience participate in a mix of educational, cultural and sporting activities, which emphasize cooperative global and intercultural living.

Why eleven year olds? These children have the maturity to be away from home and understand the purpose of the Village. They represent their culture and are young enough to accept their differences without prejudice. They communicate easily, even without a common language, and are eager to make friends.

Although English is the official language of CISV, all international programs and activities incorporate many languages and cultures.

A Director, Staff and six Junior Counselors (age 16-17), as well as the twelve Delegation Leaders, guide the Village program. Emphasized are activities which encourage creative expression and close relationships among the children. Day by day, the children come to realize that the differences between them are less important than the similarities that bind them together. In a natural way, they learn the deeper significance of making international friendships.

Villages for Junior Counselors: age 16/ 17 – Applications due 12/18/10

  (We strongly encourage female candidates to complete applications and the selection overnight process to be added to a wait list in preparation for potential bonus camp opportunities)

Please note, selected Junior Counselors must participate in a National Leadership training weekend. Trainings are held at various locations in the USA approximately monthly in winter and spring.

Application

All Applicants for Village programs, 11 year old delegates, 16-17 year old Junior Counselors, and adult leader applicants, must participate in a one day Selection Mini Camp to be held from January 8 - January 9, 2010 - 7pm Friday thru 2pm Saturday in Redwood City.

Age Requirements:
Summer Village Delegates: 11 years old (must be 11 one day between June 1 and Aug 31, 2010).
Winter Village Delegates: 11 years old (must be 11 one day between Nov 1 and Jan 31, 2011).
Adult Leaders: 21 years+ (by date camp starts).
Junior Counselors: 16-17 years old (by date camp starts).

By the end of January 2010 selected participants will have been notified. Additional forms will need to be completed by those individuals only and are required for participation and travel to their assigned Village abroad or within the US.
